Description

Blacktail Mountain is located approximately five miles east of Cocallala, Idaho.  We were working in Sandpoint, Idaho, so we decided to go out on another small hike.  We settled on Blacktail Mountain because of the lower elevation and the close proximity to town.  I had previously been on this trail, but continued on the ridge all the way to Butler Mountain in 2000.  The trail had been worked on since I was last in the area.  The forest service had added a significant amount of switchbacks making the hike more manageable.  It appeared as though the trail received a lot of motor bike and ATV use.  It took us one hour to get to the top and 35 minutes to get back down.
