On our way to Ouray, Colorado, for a weekend of ice climbing, we decided to stop off in the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction, Colorado, and check out some ice I have been wanting to climb for several years. We heard it was in and thought it was a good opportunity to check out a new area. John, Jeff S. and I, picked up Jeff K. in Dillon, Colorado, on the way through the Front Range and then made our way across the state. After a quick breakfast at Burger King, we were hiking up No Thoroughfare Canyon around 10:15. The approach is about an hour to the climb.
Not exactly sure how difficult the climb was going to be, Jeff S. led the first section to a bolted anchor on the left side of the final pillar. He brought me up, and then I finished the pitch to another set of anchors on the right. Jeff and I quickly set up a top rope and rappelled down to John and Jeff K. We all got a couple more laps in before hiking back out and heading down to Ouray, Colorado. Jeff K. was kind enough to tap the keg of beer we had for a quick beverage before we departed.
